Reflections of the Bunker Guards
22-23 February 1969 Post Tet New Years Attack of Long Binh Post

Bunker #511 We were on perimeter guard the night of 22 February into the morning of 23 February 1969 at Bunker #511.  We didn't have any pre-warning that there was any enemy activity in the area. We heard something in the fence out in front of us and called back to the guard tower to see what was going on since we had no night vision capability.  Whoever was on the other end of the line said "don't worry about it."

A few minutes later there was an explosion and all the bunkers opened up and it went on for several hours.  Personnel from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment came in and lit up the place pretty good with their fire.  There were probably people from other units too but I don't know who they were. When daylight finally came out, we went down to the perimeter wire to check it out and there were dead NVA lying everywhere with pieces of bodies in the concertina wire. SP/4 Jay  P. Schwertfeger, US Army Engineer Construction Agency Vietnam, June, 1968 to May 1969.
