In Defense Of The Finger Of Land Ambush Teams 74, 77, and 78: All three squads were first situated in their assigned positions on the Finger, on line [east to west] in a blocking position, but separate from each other. At 0200 hours [2:00 AM] they also observed the enemy rockets announcing the start of the attack pass over their positions in route to the post. Based on reports from Ambush Team #76, who were situated on Hill-15, of a large enemy force moving north towards their position on the Finger, Battalion Tactical Operation Command ordered the squads to link up and form a single defensive position. SGT Ronald Robinson, observed approximately twenty-five of the enemy passing near their position. He called in allied artillery and opened fire on the enemy troops with their squad weapons. The enemy troops were taken by surprise and scattered into the surrounding cover. Shortly after the first sighting the squad spotted another group of the enemy about fifty yards from their position. Again they opened fire with their squad weapons, the enemy briefly returned fire before melting into the surrounding cover. The Ambush squads remained in their defensive position listening to the sounds of battle along the post perimeter far to their rear. At approximately 0800 hours [8:00 AM] the Ambush squads were joined by a relief unit from the 11th Armored Cavalry Unit. The MP’s and elements of Troops A & B supported by Tanks, Armored Personnel carriers (APC's), and a Huey Cobra gunship, formed a skirmish line and conducted a sweep [east to west] along the Finger of Land. Enemy contact was sporadic but at times fierce and at close quarters. The enemy hid themselves in numerous spider holes and trenches. Armed with automatic weapons and RPGs the enemy stayed in their positions as the Cobra gunship sprayed the area with machine gun fire, suppressing the enemy fire, while the ground troops rooted them out one at a time. A total of 38 enemy bodies, assorted rifles, small arms ammunition, RPGs, medical equipment, rice, and even several transistor radios were found. Other members of the Ambush Teams involved in the blocking force were, SP/4 Paul R. Hrip, and others yet to be identified.
